Hope of Today is a reader-funded news organization.
Short version: we don't run ads, we don't use an analytics service, and we don't sell or share anything about you. What follows is the long version, written plainly.
You can read Hope of Today without an account, and we don't ask who you are. We don't know your name or your email.
To count how many people read a story, your browser makes up a random string and keeps it. It goes with the record that a story was opened, read, shared or saved. It's a browser, not a person — it has no name attached, it isn't linked to anything else, and clearing your browser data replaces it with a new one.
Stories you save are kept in your own browser. We record that a save happened so writers can see it; we don't keep your list.
We keep your email address, the name you want printed on your work, and the date you joined.
Signing in with Google: we ask Google for three things — that you're signed in, your email address, and your basic profile (name and picture). Nothing else. Google never gives us your password, and we never see it. We store your Google account id so we recognise you next time.
Signing in with a password: we never store the password itself. We store a scrypt hash with a salt unique to you — a one-way transformation that can check a password but can't be turned back into one.
The pitch form keeps what you type into it: your name, email, the pitch, and any links. It goes to the editors and nowhere else.
One cookie, called hot_session, set only when you sign in. It keeps you signed in for thirty days and nothing else. It can't be read by scripts, it's only sent over an encrypted connection, and the server stores only a fingerprint of it rather than the value itself.
There are no advertising cookies and no tracking cookies, because there's no advertising and no tracking.
Google, if you choose to sign in with Google. That's between you and Google under their privacy policy; we only receive the three things listed above.
Google Fonts. The typefaces on this site are loaded from Google's servers, which means your browser tells Google it fetched them — including your IP address — even if you never sign in. We'd rather that weren't true, and we intend to serve the fonts ourselves.
That's the entire list. No analytics service, no advertising network, no social media pixels, no data brokers.
We don't keep a log of who visited what. Your address is held in memory for a few minutes if there are repeated failed sign-in attempts, purely to slow down someone guessing passwords, and then it's gone.
Email us and we'll delete it, along with your email address and everything tied to it. We don't make you argue with a form.
Hope of Today isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly create accounts for anyone under 13.
We'll update this page and change the date below. If a change actually matters to you, we'll say so on the site rather than quietly editing it.

Reading is free and always will be for the stories we mark open to all. You don't need an account. Don't try to break the site, scrape it wholesale, or republish our journalism as your own — beyond that, enjoy it and pass it on.
Anyone can make an account. Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account. One person, one account — don't pretend to be someone you aren't, and don't make an account for someone else.
We can suspend or remove an account that's being used to abuse the site or the people on it. If we ever do that to you, we'll tell you why.

This one matters more to us than anything else on this page. Every article on Hope of Today is written by a human being. When you submit, you tick a box confirming that no part of it was generated by AI. If that turns out to be untrue, we'll unpublish the piece and end the arrangement. We'd rather publish less and mean it.
Memberships aren't open yet, and nothing on this site currently takes payment. When they open, we'll set out clearly what a membership costs, what it gets you, and how to cancel — before you're asked for anything. Any tier prices shown on the site today are an indication of intent, not an offer.
Hope of Today is a young publication running on modest infrastructure. We don't promise the site will always be available, or that nothing will ever be lost. We'll take reasonable care — backups, sensible security — but we're telling you plainly rather than hiding it in capital letters.
The site is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from using it. Nothing here limits liability for things that can't legally be limited.
We'll update this page and change the date below. If a change affects what you've already written or paid for, we'll tell you directly rather than relying on you to re-read this.
